Dynamic Brain-in-the-Loop Game Unveiled at Google Developers Conference

Intific, Inc. unveiled a dynamic, brain-in-the-loop game to thousands of attendees at the Google I/O Developers Conference After Hours event in San Francisco, CA, June 26-27, 2012. The game “NeuroStorm” is based on two ongoing Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) efforts – the electroencephalography (EEG) based Advanced Peak Performance Trainer (APPT) from Advanced Brain Monitoring and the RealWorld with NeuroBridge software platform from Intific, Inc. The game represents a revolution in neuroscience applications allowing researchers and developers to build complex scenarios, experiences and games based on real-time neurophysiological signals.

This new game, NeuroStorm, is a game that rewards mental focus designed around a “shooter on rails” experience. The brain signals, in this case a real-time metric of focused, relaxed concentration, are synchronized with the game and directly and immediately impact game play. A player can’t win without producing substantial focus, so it’s not enough just to be a good shot. The better the player’s ability to stay in the zone, the better their score – and the better their chances of attaining an optimal score. The neuroscience behind the game was funded by DARPA in order to teach marksmen how to put their brains into an optimal performance state. DARPA found that significant improvements in shooting accuracy were achieved by training participants to control their brain signals alone, separate from the physical task of shooting.
